Burial on Private Ground

It is possible to bury someone on private property, meaning not in a designated cemetery.

Each local council has a policy for burial on private ground, and this must be complied with.

It is usually possible and really useful to check this out in advance, either in person, or by checking the website of your local council.

In the event of a sudden death it can usually all be arranged in time.

The policy usually involves things like:

  • a minimum size of the landholding involved,
  • obtaining written permission from the title holder (the owner),
  • undertaking to register the grave site on the DP (Deposited Plan of the property),
  • selection of a spot that is approved by the Health Dept,
  • that the grave is dug to the approved depth, with a minimum clearance from the lid.
